The spinner came up on Photography today so I spent an hour on this book.
Before I start though I’ll mention the randomly picked Penguin Archive book from the Penguin Anniversary challenge that was Night Owl by Nikolai Leskov was a DNF for me. I read half of it and needed to stop. Night Owls” by Nikolai Leskov is a short, sharply satirical Russian story that looks at religious faith, hypocrisy, morality and social pretence. Not for me at this time.
I am just not in the mood at this moment.

So onwards to Photography.
I have a few favourite street photographers from the past and most were in New York City. Though I have several books that are not located there. In NYC Jay Maisel was my favourite and I see he just died last month at the age of 94. I really liked him. He was very down to earth and lived his entire life with a camera. His main message was, “Street photography is light, colour and gesture” This is what one looks for. You tube has a lot of info on him.
Though originally street photos were all black and white which is also still popular even though colour has now been available for years.
I like Vivian Maier and Dorothea Lange and Saul Leiter. But of course they ate all gone now. Street photos can be edited by balancing the light or removing objects that might detract from the photo. This is different from photo journalism where the photos must only be published as is. Nothing should be changed from the final result.
There are different types of street photos. Urban architecture to the stories of people in the street. Here are a few I like.
GThe photo of the world trade center was taken by Joel Meyerowitz. No one was allowed within the rubble outside of city workers after the event. But he dressed himself as a construction worker and was the only person to reveal those photos. He is still living.
Look at the pictures below. They either tell a story or they feature shadows and light that are quite artistic. Just a few examples.

Travellin' Penguin 
Your photography is quite different from mine, but of course it is all about the light, and telling a story. I see that Penguin uses the OM system, and so I assume you do too. People I know have OM cameras and lenses and find them very good for bird photography. I am tempted, but it’s a big thing to change systems – I have Canon gear and have used it for many years, though I have moved from DSLR to mirrorless, both camera and lenses.
My favourite American photographers? Margaret Bourke White, Edward Steichen and of course Ansel Adams.

I use a Canon r5 and lens+ for my main photos. But I recently bought an OM5 mark ii for street photography. If I only had one it would be the Canon.
Ansel Adams was wonderful. I read his biography. He started out when young as a concert pianist but met up with friends who were photographers and the rest is history. I do mainly street, landscape and some macro. I;m spending a week in the Tarkine in October on a small photo tour. Love that area.
